United States: In an unexpected turn of events at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport on Thursday evening, an air traffic controller found himself entangled in legal turmoil following an altercation, as confirmed by the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority in a statement to CNN.
Damon Marsalis Gaines, a 39-year-old resident of Upper Marlboro, Maryland, has been formally charged with assault and battery in connection with the incident, authorities at the airport disclosed.
“The employee has been placed on administrative leave as we conduct a thorough investigation into the matter,” the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) relayed to CNN.
Attempts to reach Gaines for comment have been made by CNN, though his response remains absent. It is currently uncertain whether he has secured legal representation. This arrest comes at a time when heightened scrutiny looms over the airport, particularly following January’s mid-air collision involving a military helicopter and a commercial passenger aircraft. Compounding concerns, a subsequent near-miss took place the very next day when military jets en route to Arlington National Cemetery inadvertently triggered a collision warning aboard a departing Delta Air Lines flight.
