Big Earthquake Near Russia Triggers Tsunami Waves That Hit California

United States: Tsunami waves have begun hitting Northern California, with higher water levels observed in Crescent City, located near the Oregon border. One wave was just over a foot tall, and experts say more may be on the way.

This part of the coast—approximately 100 miles long—is under a tsunami warning, the highest level of alert. The shape of the ocean floor in this area makes it easier for waves to get stronger and more dangerous.

Massive Quake Near Russia Triggers Warnings Around the Pacific

The reason for the tsunami is a huge 8.8-magnitude earthquake that happened off the coast of Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula. This earthquake caused tsunami alerts across the Pacific Ocean, including Japan, Hawaii, Alaska, and the US West Coast.

Most areas are not under full warnings, but are being advised to stay cautious. A tsunami isn’t just one wave—it can be a series of strong waves that keep coming.

Russia Hit by Large Waves After Quake

In Russia’s Kamchatka region, waves between 10 to 13 feet were reported. Local news said some people were hurt, and more shaking (aftershocks) is expected. Emergency crews are assisting and relocating people to safer areas.

Japan Takes Safety Steps as Small Waves Arrive

In northern Japan, waves of about 12 inches were recorded in Hokkaido. Authorities there have initiated evacuation plans to ensure the safety of the people.

US on Alert – Hawaii Ports Closed, Evacuation Warnings Given

In Hawaii, Governor Josh Green asked everyone to follow safety instructions and stay calm. The US Coast Guard has closed key ports on the islands.

President Donald Trump advised people to stay informed about updates from the US Tsunami Warning Centers and remain prepared for any changes.

NOAA Issues Warnings for Pacific Islands

The US weather agency NOAA also warned that places such as Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, and Vanuatu could be at risk. CNN reported that the US Embassy in Papua New Guinea is advising Americans to remain alert and move to higher ground if they notice unusual sea behavior or strong shaking.

People were advised to stay away from beaches and rivers and to have emergency supplies, including food, water, medicine, and important documents, readily available.

Many Islands Still at Risk

Many island nations in the Pacific are closely watching the situation. Because they are located in an area with a high frequency of earthquakes and volcanoes, they are more at risk. Experts say that more waves or aftershocks may occur.

This strong earthquake near Russia has sent waves of concern across the ocean. From California to Japan, many places are watching closely. Even if the first wave seems small, others may follow. People living near the sea should remain vigilant, heed local warnings, and be prepared to act quickly.
