Delta Jet’s Near-Miss With Military Fighter Sparks FAA Investigation

United States: A strange aviation encounter unfolded as a Delta Air Lines Airbus A319, ascending from Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, narrowly avoided a precarious interaction with a US Air Force T-38 Talon—an advanced jet often deployed for military training maneuvers. The incident sent shudders through the cockpit of the commercial airliner, triggering onboard alerts and immediate evasive action.

Delta Flight 2983 embarked on its journey at approximately 3:15 pm, en route to Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport, following standard operational schedules. While Delta did not formally disclose the identity of the other aircraft involved, meticulous scrutiny of FlightRadar24 trajectory data unmistakably pinpointed an Air Force T-38 hurtling through the airspace adjacent to the Delta craft, exceeding 350 miles per hour at an altitude of 800 feet. The military aircraft initiated and concluded its flight operations at Langley Air Force Base, situated in Hampton, Virginia, according to CNN.

Efforts to elicit a formal response from the Air Force remain ongoing, with CNN awaiting commentary on the event.

According to an official statement from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the Delta aircraft had been granted clearance for takeoff at 3:15 pm ET. Concurrently, a formation of four US Air Force T-38 Talons was executing a ceremonial flyover above Arlington National Cemetery. In response to an onboard proximity alert signaling the presence of another aircraft in unnervingly close quarters, air traffic controllers promptly issued corrective directives to both airborne parties.

The FAA has since launched an exhaustive inquiry into the alarming near-miss.

This harrowing episode transpired just south of DCA, in proximity to the tragic collision of an American Airlines regional jet and an Army Black Hawk helicopter on January 29—a catastrophe that claimed the lives of 67 individuals.

During a congressional hearing convened on Thursday, senators pressed aviation regulators for accountability, demanding explanations for the longstanding oversight of hazardous interactions between military helicopters and civilian aircraft within the region.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) revealed findings that chronicled over 15,000 recorded instances between 2021 and 2024 wherein commercial airliners and helicopters breached perilous proximity thresholds. Of these, 85 cases presented particularly alarming figures, with aircraft separated by a mere 1,500 feet vertically and 200 feet laterally, as per the reports by CNN.

In response, the FAA has since enacted stringent measures, including the cessation of a helicopter transit corridor adjacent to the airport and the imposition of mandatory activation of collision-avoidance systems for military aircraft navigating near DCA. However, these countermeasures proved insufficient in averting the peril that unfolded during Delta 2983’s departure.

Audio transcripts from LiveATC.net captured the chilling exchange between the Delta pilot and air traffic control.

“On that departure … was there an actual aircraft about 500 feet beneath us as we came off of DCA?” the Delta pilot inquired, his voice laced with apprehension.

“Delta 2983, affirmative,” confirmed the departure controller.

The pilot further disclosed that the onboard Traffic Alert and Collision Avoidance System (TCAS) had issued a “resolution advisory”—a critical warning that instructs pilots on necessary evasive maneuvers to avert an impending collision.

Morgan Durrant, a spokesperson for Delta Air Lines, underscored the airline’s unwavering commitment to safety: “Nothing supersedes the safety of our customers and crew. The flight crew adhered to established protocols and executed the necessary maneuvers as directed,” according to reports by CNN.

Aboard the Delta Airbus A319 were two pilots, three flight attendants, and 131 passengers—each unwittingly caught in the throes of a potential disaster, narrowly circumvented by swift action and regulatory vigilance.
