Ex-Vols Coach Derek Dooley Enters Georgia Senate Race, Promises to ‘Put Georgia First’

United States: Derek Dooley, once best known for coaching the University of Tennessee football team, has traded his playbook for a campaign pitch. On Monday, he officially threw his name into the ring for Georgia’s US Senate seat, setting the stage for a fresh GOP face aiming to unseat Democratic Senator Jon Ossoff.

Dooley’s campaign launch leans heavily on his gridiron background. Drawing parallels between football and American democracy, he paints himself as a no-frills outsider ready to restore faith in government.

“Football is built on the American spirit. You hustle, play fair, and never quit. That’s how you win — in the game and in life,” reads his campaign message, according to ABC News.

“As a coach, I wanted every player to succeed. Now, I want that for every Georgian — and every American.”

Positioning Himself as the Underdog with Bite

With a tagline of “Georgia First,” Dooley’s campaign is carving out space among voters frustrated with career politicians. His message? Public servants have lost touch — serving themselves instead of those who elected them.

Dooley isn’t just another hopeful with a good slogan. He’s the son of the late Vince Dooley, a University of Georgia coaching legend whose name still echoes in state history. His deep ties to Georgia Governor Brian Kemp, including family friendships and college connections, add another layer to his profile.

It’s worth noting that Vince Dooley was a visible supporter of Donald Trump during his 2016 campaign, appearing with him at a rally in Atlanta and giving his endorsement.

A Cautionary Tale Looms Over the GOP

Dooley’s entrance into the political scene comes as Republicans try to rebound from a stinging 2022 Senate loss, when football icon Herschel Walker was defeated by Senator Raphael Warnock. That race was marred by controversy and left the GOP struggling to find a winning formula. The party is determined not to repeat that mistake.

The challenge now? A crowded Republican field. With Governor Kemp confirming in May that he won’t seek the Senate seat, several hopefuls have already stepped in. Dooley joins a lineup that includes Reps. Mike Collins and Buddy Carter, both of whom have hitched their campaigns tightly to Trump’s brand, as per ABC News.

Not Just Another Trump Loyalist

Unlike his GOP rivals, Dooley isn’t making Trump the centerpiece of his pitch. Where Carter boasts about being a “MAGA warrior” and Collins flaunts his Trump-endorsed legislative work — like pushing the Laken Riley Act — Dooley’s tone is more personal than political.

In his launch video, he gives a nod to Trump’s achievements but doesn’t focus on them. Instead, he offers a biographical look at his journey and closes with a promise to “work with the president” to serve the nation.

GOP Leaders Try to Avoid a Messy Showdown

Behind the scenes, pressure is mounting to streamline the primary process. Trump and Kemp — two figures with a rocky past — have started collaborating in hopes of rallying around a strong candidate to avoid another bruising loss.

Sources say the two met earlier this summer to discuss Georgia’s Senate race strategy. Both camps understand the cost of a fractured primary and seem to agree on one thing: unity will be key if Republicans want to flip the seat.
