Governor Polis, Faith Leaders Speak Out After Antisemitic Incident in Colorado

United States: Under a sun-drenched sky in downtown Boulder, a profound message coursed through the air — defiance against cruelty, and an unwavering pledge to collective peace.

A tapestry of voices — spiritual guides, civic leaders, and compassionate locals — converged outside the Boulder County Courthouse along the vibrant Pearl Street Mall. Their reason: to denounce the vile antisemitic assault that shadowed last Sunday’s peaceful awareness walk for hostages detained by Hamas.

This gathering, rich in humanity, pulled together over 20 groups, among them the afflicted organization, Boulder Run for Their Lives. Houses of worship across Jewish, Christian, and Muslim traditions stood in attendance. Notably, the Anti-Defamation League and key city figures also lent their presence to amplify the call for harmony.

A Governor’s Pledge: Steel Against Violence

Governor Jared Polis addressed the crowd with solemn strength, as per 9news.com.

“I stand shoulder to shoulder with the resilient spirit of Boulder,” he declared. “We denounce this malicious act of hate. No kind of savagery — in any shape — belongs on Colorado soil.”

A Survivor Speaks from the Heart

Orrie Gartner, who experienced the tragedy firsthand with his kin, returned to the very ground that bore witness to the atrocity. His words held the weight of both sorrow and resolve.

“I returned to listen — to absorb the heart of our leadership,” he reflected. “What I heard brought comfort and courage.”

While his family escaped physical harm, they swiftly moved to shield and assist friends scorched in the attack.

“Today’s sea of support — Muslims, Jews, neighbors from all walks — was deeply moving,” Gartner shared. “Every voice seemed to echo one truth: empathy bridges us. Dialogue is our compass. And violence must never take root here.”

He recalled a poignant detail — a photograph his father snapped of the Run for Their Lives group just before calamity struck. That image, now in the hands of investigators, captures those present in that frozen moment of innocence.

A Faith Leader’s Conviction Echoes

Among the speakers, Imam Nader Elmarhoumi of the Islamic Center of Boulder rose with grace and gravity. His appeal against hatred — met with warm applause, struck a chord:

“We must extinguish any embers of bias, whether flung at Jews or Muslims. Attacks like these corrode the safety of all who dwell here,” he said. “Our Islamic principles of compassion and neighborly duty mirror American ideals. We stand unswervingly for peace,” according to 9news.com.

Turning Pain Into Purpose

Gartner, still processing the echoes of trauma, left the gathering more resolute than ever. His commitment to spotlighting the plight of hostages and fostering unity remains firm.

“We all feel it now — violence cannot be the language of disagreement,” he affirmed. “The silence of good people enables hate. Whether it’s antisemitic venom or Islamophobic poison, we must rise and speak. Every time.”
