How is probe into Ex-President’s attempted assassination unfolding?

United States: Official inquiries into the assault on ex-President Donald Trump during a campaign assembly in Pennsylvania’s Butler County on Saturday are in progress.

A projectile discharged by a marksman from an adjacent rooftop grazed Trump’s right ear as he commenced his speech to an audience of supporters.

Trump, with a bloodied ear, was swiftly escorted by the US Secret Service to a nearby medical facility. The shooter, identified as Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20, was neutralized within moments by the Secret Service, according to reports by Al-Jazeera.

As the entity accountable for probing assassinations and attempts on the lives of presidents and presidential hopefuls, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) will spearhead the investigation. Nevertheless, other bodies, including state law enforcement, the Secret Service, and the Department of Homeland Security, will also partake.

Here is the current status of the investigation:

Who is investigating the shooting?

The FBI issued a statement on Saturday affirming that its operatives are present in Butler, collaborating with the Secret Service to examine the assassination attempt on the former president.

The FBI is scrutinizing both the perpetrator and the security measures implemented at the rally.

The inquiry into the demise of Corey Comperatore, a rally participant who perished while shielding his family from gunfire, “is under the jurisdiction of the State of Pennsylvania. Hence the Pennsylvania State Police bear investigative responsibility for that homicide,” former FBI agent Kenneth Gray informed Al Jazeera.

When delving into the security at the rally, the emphasis is expected to be on the security arrangements preceding the event and the reaction to the assault as it transpired, experts suggested. “The goal is to identify any lapses in security provision and amend them for forthcoming events,” Gray noted.

President Joe Biden has also mandated the Department of Homeland Security to conduct an autonomous review of the incident, Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas stated on Monday.

“We intend to thoroughly scrutinize the event independently and propose recommendations to the Secret Service. It is imperative that the facts be ascertained by an external body outside the Department of Homeland Security to ensure the integrity of the investigative process, the conclusions derived, and the recommendations proffered have the complete confidence of the government and the American populace.”

What has the investigation uncovered so far?

To date, the FBI has announced that it has searched the assailant’s residence and vehicle, where explosive devices were discovered. The motive behind the shooting remains undetermined, as reported by Al-Jazeera.

What evidence relating to the shooter is the FBI examining?

The latest FBI update on the case stated that bomb technicians had determined that the “suspicious devices” found at Crooks’s home and vehicles were secure. These devices are now under evaluation at the FBI Laboratory.

Gray remarked that the FBI’s investigation would likely “encompass interviews with witnesses at the rally, individuals who may have known the shooter, and a search of his domicile and automobile.”

The investigation is also anticipated to include “forensic evidence collection, digital forensics, and other components,” Gray added, noting, “Social media activity will undoubtedly be scrutinized, as will the shooter’s phone.”

What security concerns have been highlighted so far?

While the FBI has not disclosed specifics about any aspect of its investigation, reports surfaced on Monday indicating that the rooftop from which Crooks fired at Trump had been “identified by the Secret Service as a potential vulnerability in the days leading up to the event.”

An unnamed former senior Secret Service agent was quoted by US news network NBC saying: “Personnel should have been stationed on the roof or securing the building to prevent anyone from accessing the roof,” as per Al-Jazeera.

Mayorkas also informed ABC News that the shooter should never have been able to attain the position he did: “A direct line of sight like that to the former president should not have been possible.”
