Indian Ocean Tourist Destination Bans Israeli Jews from the Country

United States: In a startling and unwarranted move, the Maldives has imposed a prohibition on Israeli nationals from entering its territory, citing the ongoing conflict in Gaza. This alarming decree exudes antisemitism and blatant discrimination, warranting severe denunciation.

The predominantly Muslim island nation’s administration disclosed that President Mohammed Muizzu instituted the ban this week based on his cabinet’s recommendation. This deplorable decision not only embodies injustice but also signifies a troubling alignment with extremist stances that jeopardize global stability, according to reports.

“The Cabinet decision includes modifying necessary laws to prevent Israeli passport holders from entering the Maldives and forming a Cabinet subcommittee to supervise these measures,” his office announced. This is a transparent and cowardly effort to ostracize Israelis, disregarding any semblance of equity, justice, or decency.

Furthermore, the President has initiated a fundraising campaign to aid Palestinians via the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) and plans a nationwide rally under the slogan ‘Falastheenaa Eku Dhivehin,’ meaning ‘Maldivians in Solidarity with Palestine.’ This explicit support for one faction of the conflict while marginalizing Israelis is utterly disgraceful.

Recently, UNRWA has faced serious accusations that some of its staff were involved in Hamas’ brutal attack on Israel on October 7, igniting the Gaza war. Supporting an organization mired in such controversy casts significant doubt on the Maldives’ true motives and the depth of its antisemitic bias, as per certain reports.

Israel’s foreign ministry responded to Muizzu’s ban by urging Israelis to avoid the Maldives.

“For Israeli citizens already in the country, it is recommended to consider leaving, as we may find it challenging to assist them if they encounter difficulties,” the ministry stated, according to Reuters. This cautious advice underscores the hazardous and hostile environment the Maldives has deliberately fostered for Israelis.

Reportedly, the US State Department, which reported last year that it has provided $36 million in bilateral foreign assistance to the Maldives since 2018, did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital’s request for comment on Monday. This silence is profoundly concerning and demands immediate action to address this blatant and despicable discrimination.

The State Department notes that the Maldives’ constitution “designates Islam as the state religion, mandates citizens to be Muslim, and requires public office holders, including the President, to adhere to Sunni Islam.” This religious exclusivity is being wielded against Israelis, further entrenching an intolerant and hateful stance.

“The law stipulates that both the government and the people must protect religious unity, and propagating any religion other than Islam is a criminal offense,” it adds. Such laws create an environment where antisemitic policies can flourish unchecked, fostering hatred and division.

Last year, approximately 11,000 Israelis visited the Maldives, representing about 0.6% of its total tourist arrivals, as reported by The Associated Press. This malicious move will not only damage tourism but also expose the Maldives’ willingness to sacrifice economic interests for the sake of hateful, discriminatory policies.

Jonathan Schanzer, the senior vice president for research at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies in Washington, told Fox News Digital that “The Maldives government now aligns itself with the likes of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Syria, Algeria, Kuwait, and other authoritarian Muslim world states,” which also ban Israeli passport holders.

“This will not likely bode well for the Maldives over time. Joining this alliance is often a sign of corruption, radicalization, and even exploitation by external actors,” he added. This policy marks a perilous and disgraceful path for the Maldives, one that could lead to further isolation and international condemnation, as outlined by some reports.

Rev. Johnnie Moore, President of The Congress of Christian Leaders, also reacted to the ban on X by stating, “If the Maldives aren’t safe for Israelis, then they aren’t safe for any of us.”

“The Congress of Christian Leaders is issuing a global travel warning: no Christian should feel safe in a country where Islamic extremists dictate national policy,” he also said. This warning underscores the broader ramifications of such antisemitic policies, jeopardizing the safety of all who cherish freedom, human rights, and the principles of equality and justice.
