United States: JD Vance, the Republican freshman senator from Ohio and running mate of Donald Trump, journeyed to the southern border on Thursday to spotlight what he describes as Kamala Harris’s inadequacies as the border czar, particularly in curbing the influx of perilous substances like fentanyl and unauthorized immigration into the nation.
Adorned in a plaid shirt, trousers, and boots, Vance campaigned in a region of southern Arizona often depicted as a “smuggler’s paradise,” addressing the “crisis” at the border under “Kamala Harris’s administration.”
“They halted deportations on the first day. They ceased the construction of the border wall on the first day,” Vance asserted, according to reports.
Echoing his declarations at the RNC the previous month, Vance once again personalized the border issues by recounting his mother’s previous struggles with substance abuse.
Vance reminisced about a harrowing incident from his youth when he fervently prayed to Jesus, hoping his mother would “wake up” from what appeared to be a heroin overdose.
“The harsh reality is that due to the venom that Kamala Harris has allowed to infiltrate this country, many such prayers remain unanswered. Numerous parents won’t awaken because when you consume fentanyl, you don’t wake up,” he elaborated.
Despite the plethora of issues at the border, Vance posited that there are straightforward solutions: deport individuals unlawfully present in the country, process asylum requests in Mexico, terminate the catch-and-release policy, and complete the wall, as per reports.
“If individuals can enter this country and know they will never face deportation, you effectively have an open border,” Vance contended. “That’s what Kamala Harris promised. That’s what Kamala Harris executed. This is not rocket science.”
Furthermore, Vance mentioned that other border officials had repeatedly sought Harris’s assistance but were rebuffed, including Paul Perez, the current president of the National Border Patrol Council, and Brandon Judd, the former council president.
“They dispatch letters, they make phone calls,” Vance claimed. “They are pleading with the American president and vice president for leadership, yet their own border czar neglects them.”
Reportedly, ultimately, Vance lambasted the media for disseminating “falsehoods” regarding Harris’s role as border czar. “It’s utterly astonishing what we’re permitting at the southern border, and it’s happening because Kamala Harris refuses to fulfill her duties,” he remarked.
“The media needs to convey the truth, and Kamala Harris needs to rectify this chaotic border situation.”
Since her appointment as the administration’s border czar by Joe Biden in March 2021, Harris has made only one visit to the southern border. This visit occurred in June 2021, following pressure from Lester Holt during an interview that went viral due to her lackluster performance, and after Trump—prior to his tenure—decided to host a town hall meeting with Texas Republican Governor Greg Abbott near the border.
