Senate Joni Ernst Pushes for ‘Sarah’s Law’ Amid Controversy, Sparks Debate in Congress as Democrats Try to Block

United States: The politics of the United States has taken another turn as the Representative for Iowa – Senate Joni Ernst, has asked to force a floor vote on a law that would require the illegal immigrants who commit violent crimes to be detained. According to the appeal made by the Senate, the criminal must be arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

She outlined that this law will contribute to preventing avoidable attacks, resulting in deaths.

But, this new rule by Senate was criticized by Republican Majority Whip Dick Durbin, D-Ill., and the request was objected, according to Fox News.

Ernst’s appeal to pass the law!

While addressing the law, she pleaded with her colleagues to pass her bill, named Sarah’s Law. She also recalled the death of Sara Root and Laken Riley, who were allegedly killed by the illegal immigrants.

According to her, the bill will focus on arresting illegal immigrants who have committed any crime, including the death or serious injury of any other individual. Ernst, during her speech, was quoted saying, “It would merely require ICE to detain, just to detain, otherwise deportable illegal immigrants charged with killing or seriously injuring another person,” according to the reports published by Fox News.

Durbin’s comment!

Durbin, while sharing his viewpoint about the same, stated that the victims of trafficking or domestic abuse will be detained under the bill. The bill will “deprive immigrants of the due process that everyone is afforded,” he outlined while emphasizing.

Ernst recalls the murder of Sarah Root and Laken Riley –

While presenting her bills, Senate Ernst also recalled the tragic incidents that happened with Sarah Root, 21-year-old, and Laken Riley, 22-year-old. She mentioned that Edwin Mejia, the drunk driver who killed Root, ultimately escaped facing the court. Reportedly, he entered the country illegally.

Ernst said, “Citing the Obama administration’s November 2014 memo on immigration enforcement priorities, ICE declined to take custody of Mejia despite his repeated driving offenses and history of skipping court dates,” Fox News claimed.

In addition to this, she mentioned the killing of Riley, who was a nursing student at the University of Georgia. Certain reports claimed that she was killed last month by another illegal immigrant named Jose Ibarra. After the court found him guilty of the case, he was charged with several crimes, such as malice murder and felony murder.

The murder of Riley gained popularity and made headlines across the country last month. After the killing of congressional Republicans demanded answers, “The reality is Laken’s heartbreaking story did not have to happen,” Ernst said, as per the reports by Fox News.
