United States: A swiftly intensifying inferno of vegetation ignited an urgent evacuation directive across segments of Inyo and Mono counties on Sunday afternoon.
According to the Cal Fire San Bernardino Unit, the blaze was initially identified at 2:11 pm in the vicinity of Highway 6 and Silver Canyon Road, within the jurisdiction of Bishop.
Designated as the Silver Fire, the conflagration voraciously consumed no less than 150 acres in its nascent stages, surging eastward and northeastward with formidable velocity, as per preliminary assessments by authorities.
By 8 pm, cartographic assessments indicated the inferno had expanded to a staggering 1,000 acres, exhibiting zero percent containment. Cal Fire BDU confirmed that the blaze persisted with unrelenting aggression, devouring dense vegetation, according to ktla.com.
“All tactical resources will sustain their presence at the scene,” declared Cal Fire. “Mandatory evacuations and road blockades persist while containment barriers are being reinforced.”
A statement disseminated via X at 4 pm detailed that the Silver Fire had breached Highway 6, imperiling multiple edifices and electrical infrastructure.
“Airborne assets, heavy machinery, and supplementary engine units have been requisitioned,” reported Cal Fire BDU.
Firefighting contingents encountered formidable adversities, contending with arid underbrush and tempestuous winds. Due to hazardous atmospheric turbulence, an aerial assault comprising two tankers and an additional unit faced either diversion or operational incapacitation.
The National Weather Service in Las Vegas recorded wind gusts at Bishop Airport fluctuating between 25 to 30 mph from the west-southwest, with a relative humidity measuring approximately 10 percent, as per ktla.com
With reinforcement from Mono County law enforcement, evacuation measures commenced in White Mountain Estates prior to 5 pm.
As of 6 pm, compulsory evacuation orders remained in effect for the following designated sectors: ICU-017-B, ICU-019, ICU-057-B, ICU-065, ICU-087-B, ICU-087-E, and MCU-E039.
“There exists an immediate peril to human life,” Cal Fire cautioned, adding, “This is an official directive to VACATE IMMEDIATELY. Public access to the affected area is strictly prohibited.”
Authorities in Mono County confirmed the establishment of an evacuation sanctuary at the Benton Community Center, situated at 58869 Highway 120 in Benton.
At approximately 5:30 pm, the California Highway Patrol in Bishop announced the closure of Highway 6, according to ktla.com.
No casualties or fatalities were reported in the initial aftermath.
Officials stated that an in-depth investigation is underway to ascertain the fire’s origin.
