Trump demands 2020 probe, again: Calls it a “LANDSLIDE” theft, pushes for special prosecutor

United States: On Friday, President Donald Trump reignited his demand for a deep-rooted investigation into the 2020 presidential election—an electoral contest he contends was “stolen” through mass-scale trickery. Venting his frustrations on Truth Social, Trump declared with thunderous certainty that the election was won in a “LANDSLIDE!” and dubbed the process a “total FRAUD!”

Through his digital podium, Trump implored, “A Special Prosecutor must be appointed. This cannot be allowed to happen again in the United States of America! Let the work begin!” His words, fervent and fiery, echoed a familiar rallying cry among his core supporters.

Despite Trump’s persistent storm of legal actions and ballot-based litigation post-2020, no tangible proof ever surfaced to corroborate any organized fraud that could have swayed the outcome. Yet, Trump remains unmoved.

Justice Department Shrouded in Silence

In response to Trump’s latest demand, the Justice Department opted for restraint, offering no comment, no nod, no rebuttal. Their silence added a cloak of suspense to an already tangled narrative, according to NBC News.

NBC Clash: Justice or Distraction?

In an NBC “Meet the Press” sit-down from December 2024, Trump stood firm when asked whether he would use his presidential authority to retroactively investigate the 2020 vote. Host Kristen Welker posed directly: “Is that a good use of resources?”

Trump calmly responded, “I have the right, but I’m not interested. I’m the chief law enforcement officer, you do know that. I’m the president. But I’m not interested in that.” Instead, he shifted focus toward energy expansion, lower consumer costs, and securing borders from what he described as an influx of individuals with criminal or mental backgrounds.

Conspiracies and Loose Threads

Earlier that week, Trump had also lent credence to a contested theory promoted by FBI Director Kash Patel—a narrative centered on unverified claims involving fake licenses allegedly used for unlawful voting in 2020. The tale, though lacking concrete evidence, stirred fresh waves of conjecture.

The Tables Have Turned

Ironically, Trump himself was once the focus of two major special counsel investigations. The first—helmed by Robert Mueller—unfolded during his initial presidency. The second, led by Jack Smith under Biden’s term, resulted in two separate federal indictments: one over the alleged mishandling of confidential documents, and another tied to efforts to overturn the 2020 vote, culminating in the chaos of January 6, 2021, as reported by NBC News.

Trump’s defense team, challenging the legitimacy of Smith’s role, claimed Congress had never formally sanctioned special counsels. This sparked a pivotal ruling from US District Judge Aileen Cannon, who deemed Smith’s appointment “unlawful.” The Justice Department initially sought an appeal—only to abandon it following Trump’s return to office in January.

Aftermath of Victory

With his second term now underway, Trump’s influence has only intensified. On the very day of his inauguration, he enacted sweeping clemency, absolving nearly 1,500 individuals tied to the Jan. 6 uprising—many of whom had admitted to or been convicted of violently clashing with law enforcement.

Smith, in his final report before the probe was shuttered, remarked, “Trump knew that there was no outcome-determinative fraud in the 2020 election…and that he had lost.” Nonetheless, the machinery of accountability ceased turning the moment Trump reclaimed power.
