US expresses regret over stabbing of Indian student in Indiana

Washington, United States: The US State Department has expressed grief and regret over the stabbing incident against an Indian student in Valparaiso city in Indiana.

State Department, on Thursday, said that they are “deeply disturbed” by the incident. A spokesperson from the Department was quoted as saying, “We are deeply disturbed by reports of a brutal attack against Indian graduate student Varun Raj Pucha. We wish him a full recovery from his injuries. We defer to local law enforcement for any questions about this ongoing case,” according to an Indian news agency ANI.

According to the preliminary information shared by the police officials investigating the matter, the student has been identified as Varun Raj Pucha – who hails from the Telangana state of India and is studying at Valparaiso University.

Pucha was attacked in the head at a public gym on October 29 and is currently battling for his life at a hospital.  

Suspected accused of the incident

The Police authorities have underscored that 24-year-old Jordan Andrade was behind this attack on the Indian student. As per the officials, Andrade mentioned that he found Pucha “a little weird” and a threat to him, and that’s why he reacted to it.

According to the details by police, Andrade has been arrested and is facing charges of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and attempted murder. However, the reports by the Chicago Tribune stated that he pleaded not guilty before the court.

Pucha’s family

P Ram Murthy, the father of the victim, stated that he got information about the incident from the roommate of his son. Murthy mentioned, “We got information from my son’s roommate that he (my son) has been attacked by one person and, that he has been admitted to a hospital and that his condition is critical.”

Emphasizing the stern punishment to the attacker, Pucha’s aunt said, “We want justice for our child.”

Pucha’s family informed the local media that he left for the USA in August 2022 and was pursuing a Master’s degree in Computer Science from the degree. “We were looking forward to meeting him in Khamam next year,” his family expressed.

Statement from Valparaiso University

Following the attack, a statement was released by the Valparaiso University. The university outlined that they are “saddened and shocked” by the incident.

As per the reports by the Chicago Tribune, the President of the University – Jose Padilla, stated, “We are shocked and saddened by the attack on Varun Raj Pucha. At Valparaiso University, we consider each other family, and this incident is horrifying for us all. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of his friends and family.”
